Operational sustainability discussion paper feedback

As notified by the CPSU NSW in a previous bulletin on 8 November 2024, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) released a Discussion Paper on 7 November as part of their Operational Sustainability Initiative.

As outlined in the Discussion Paper distributed on 7 November 2024, the Operational Sustainability Initiative is to reduce UTS’s operating expenses by $100 Million by 2026.

The most concerning is the claim that UTS “has the second highest professional services Full Time Equivalent (FTE) in the Australian Network of Universities (ATN), 245 FTE above the average”, and that the professional workforce for UTS has grown by 33 per cent in the past two years. UTS has specifically stated in the Discussion Paper that ‘these findings point to a clear need to scale back and re-organise the professional workforce at UTS”.

The university scheduled three information and Q&A sessions

  • 19 November Research
  • 21 November Teaching Models
  • 26 November Operating Models

All three sessions have or will be recorded with any questions and answers posted on UTS’s OS Sharepoint Site.

Staff are also encouraged to submit feedback using a guided online feedback form and any questions can be sent to .

Staff have until Friday 6 December to provide feedback on the Discussion Paper.

We strongly encourage you to contribute feedback as part of this process. Though the Discussion Paper has not proposed specific changes to the structure of UTS as yet, the initiative has potentially significant and wide-reaching impact on Professional staff; and this is the best opportunity to have your voice heard on any future decisions UTS makes on its structure, financial allocation.
