University of Wollongong proposal: Staff footing the bill again

Members may be aware the University of Wollongong (UOW) management have written to staff proposing forced annual leave as a measure to get it back in the black.

The proposal outlines the following:

  • that if staff are not willing to back the proposal more serious measures will be considered.
  • that if staff do not have sufficient Annual Leave Balances Long Service Leave should be considered as an option.
  • If staff are agreeable, they should enter their leave in web kiosk now.

UOW CPSU NSW member concerns

The UOW CPSU NSW branch has been contacted by members who are understandably outraged regarding both the proposal and possible consequences if the proposal is not backed. This echoes the approach taken to the SAL negotiations.

Members have also pointed out their commitment to the university to ensure it remains viable. However, the way the proposed closure has been raised is not in keeping with genuine consultation.

UOW CPSU NSW follow up

As with the SAL proposal, the UOW CPSU NSW Branch of the Professional Staff union is following up and advocating strongly to represent your interests We have written to the university outlining the concerns raised and will be following up on those issues.

In the interim the UOW Branch of the CPSU notes:

  • That genuine consultation needs to occur with your union and until the university has consulted properly, the proposal is an idea.
  • Do not enter your leave until all the issues and alternatives are explored as the university is calling for feedback.

What next?
