Good for jobs, good for the economy: The Public Sector Needs a Pay Rise

It would come as no surprise to working people that wage growth in Australia is at historic and unprecedented lows, and failing to keep pace with inflation and the cost of living.

Despite what big business would like us to believe, it’s not just about productivity. Australia is a great place to do business: peaceful, smart, predictable and profitable. Wage sluggishness is not cyclical; unemployment is at the lowest level since the early 1970s, there are significant labour shortages across the economy, yet wage growth remains stubbornly low.

Other factors, such as government wage restraint and failed wealth-sharing models in business, are clearly contributing to wage-growth suppression.

The largest employer in the largest state, the NSW Government, can make a massive difference by giving essential Public Sector workers – the heroes of the pandemic, fires and floods – a decent, affordable pay rise.

That investment goes straight back into local communities, stimulates economic growth and drives secure employment, particularly in the regions. It also makes the private sector compete for talent and share wealth. That’s a good thing for working people and a good thing for the economy.

Whether you work for the NSW Government or not, support the PSA/CPSU NSW The Public Sector Needs a Pay Rise campaign and let’s build a better future for everyone!
