TAFE NSW: Final kick in the guts for security staff

In the coming weeks, a number of the Security Staff at your college will be leaving the organisation.

Some may return, but not as TAFE NSW Security Officers. As a union, the CPSU NSW has tried its very best industrially to stop this from occurring; however, TAFE NSW is determined to forge ahead. Security Officers at various colleges are in limbo, with no line managers to report to and no directive on to where they stand.

TAFE NSW has informed the Security Officers that they are to continue to act professionally. Whilst the removal of TAFE NSW employed Security Officers can’t be changed, the fact remains that TAFE NSW has chosen to act in a manner that is completely lacking care or respect in this difficult time.

Many members have expressed their disappointment in the way in which Security Officers have been treated. We would like to remind TAFE NSW management whilst many of you remained at home working, it was the Security Officers and other TAFE NSW employees that kept campuses operating.

Worse still is that Security Officers are being reminded that they are currently still employees of TAFE NSW and are therefore obligated to show the contractors replacing them how to do their jobs. TAFE NSW continues to show a great lack of understanding, compassion and care to Security Officers by insisting they now train the contractors replacing them.

With the departure of security staff, TAFE NSW members should reflect on the great support and professionalism provided historically for more than 100 years by Security Officers to keep the colleges safe. Many security officers have been the first respondents to emergency situations including critical first-aid issues.

The CPSU NSW will continue to support the TAFE NSW Security Officers in these last weeks, and if they choose not to provide training (as this is the responsibility of TAFE NSW) to contact the union as we will support you. TAFE NSW has a responsibility to treat all staff with respect and dignity and the CPSU NSW is happy to remind them of this fact accordingly.
