Members’ pay concerns: incorrect pay alterations for rostered and additional shifts

The CPSU NSW has received a number of reports from members regarding arbitrary alterations to rates of pay for additional shifts. These alterations depend on what other shifts Support Workers may perform during the roster period.

For example, a full-time worker should expect that any shifts they perform above and beyond their ordinary hours would be paid at overtime rates. Any shift penalties they were expecting for working certain shifts on the roster should remain in place and not be modified simply because they worked an additional shift.

Workers have personal financial obligations and there is a constant need to plan ahead and budget. It is reasonable to expect that a worker knows what rate of pay they will be paid prior to performing that work. Staff should know that their rostered shifts will be paid at the correct rate and be confident that the rate isn’t subject to change because they agree to perform other shifts.

If you believe that your pay is being inappropriately affected in this manner, please contact the CPSU NSW for advice and assistance in resolving the matter.
