Your union’s fight against TAFE’s frontline job cuts

PDF version

The CPSU NSW has been proactive in the past month-and-a-half in resisting and opposing the Berejiklian Government’s move to cut nearly 700 jobs from our TAFE NSW.

On 25 March Opposition MPs held a forum on the future of TAFE at NSW Parliament. Various stakeholders, including the CPSU NSW attended.

On Thursday 1 April 2021 we held a rally on the steps of the Ultimo TAFE in Sydney with speakers including CPSU NSW State Branch Secretary Stewart Little and Shadow Minister for TAFE and Skills, Jihad Dib.

Mr Dib is pushing to debate a motion with Minister Skills and Tertiary Education, Geoff Lee, on an enquiry into the sale of Scone campus, among other things, in Parliament in early May. The Opposition will also have the opportunity to ask questions of the Minister in May. Parliament will resume on Tuesday 4 May for two weeks.

We will keep members updated.

Student Services Branch and Facilities Management & Logistics restructures

We would like to thank all members who have provided feedback to the union on TAFE’s restructuring of both Student Services Branch (SSB) and Facilities Management & Logistics (FM&L). Many of the ideas and suggestions from members have been included in the CPSU’s official submission to TAFE on Friday 9 April.

You can read our submission HERE.

Please note, other items from individual campuses and individual members have been submitted separately.

Industrial dispute heads to the Fair Work Commission

The mapping/matching dispute which was initiated by the CPSU NSW on 25 February has not been resolved at the local level with TAFE.

See the previous 19 March bulletin HERE.

The CPSU NSW has now escalated it to the Fair Work Commission for conciliation, where we will be seeking:

  1. A review of all existing statements of duties, position and role descriptions to ensure any comparison between existing and proposed roles to ensure accurately reflects the work currently undertaken by effected employees.
  2. A comprehensive and documented explanation of the methodology used to determine matching eligibility.

And that until TAFE NSW has undertaken (a) and (b) TAFE NSW will not take any further action to implement its reorganization of the SSB or FML.

We will keep members updated.

Mapping reviews

Finally, for members who have submitted reviews and do not receive a favourable outcome, please be aware TAFE has advised the CPSU NSW that members will have a further opportunity to ‘Request a Review’ during the preplacement phase to ensure affected employees and resulting impacts have been identified.
