Sign up a colleague – Jan 2020 (PDF version)
You never know when a difficult issue will come up for you at work that you may need assistance with.
We deal with a variety of disputes regularly, ranging from flexitime, workplace bullying/discrimination, advice on pay/pay disputes to unfair dismissals and other issues.
One good reason we strongly urge employees to become union members today and not join with an issue later, is because it is not uncommon for us to have to deal with a number of individual workplace matters at any one time, and the reality is we have limited resources and need to make decisions as to the allocation of those resources (such as legal representation) fairly, equitably and by balancing the needs of long-term members against newly signed-up members.
There is no golden rule but what we’re saying is:
Don’t leave it until the very last minute to join your union if you need help. The reality is we are a non-profit organisation and must to carefully allocate resources to balance the needs of members in our advocacy and representation.
Aside from the importance of individual matters which may arise – we encourage all TAFE employees to become CPSU NSW/PSA members because in essence it is the union that fights for your annual pay rises which are carried onto all employees.
If the CPSU NSW had a weak union membership the employer would be emboldened to withhold or otherwise resist the annual pay rise. This does of course happen in less-unionised sectors.
There are various other benefits to membership: see them HERE on our website. Membership is tax-deductible, too.
If you have non-member colleague, then we suggest forwarding them this bulletin for their consideration.
Thank you.
