CPSU NSW members’ update – Extensions to fixed-term contracts

CPSU NSW members’ update – Extensions to fixed-term contracts – August 2018 (PDF version)

As you would be aware, your union, the CPSU NSW recently lodged a dispute with management on behalf of members whose fixed-term contracts were expiring and they had not received any notification as to whether they would be renewed. Many of these members have been working in insecure employment for 10 or more years.

As a result of the dispute, the approximately 50 staff affected had their contracts extended to 17 August while management tried to work out what positions would be required going forward. The CPSU NSW also met with Jon Black and told him that the way staff had been treated in this matter was unacceptable and should never happen again. Managers with authority to put forward business cases in relation to staffing requirements should have stepped up and sorted this out before the contracts ran out.

We left the dispute in place pending a more definite outcome which we are pleased to advise has been achieved.

The affected staff are being informed that their contracts will be extended until 15 February 2019, bringing some sense of relief to those concerned.

Caught up in this issue were a number of positions at Strathfield/OTEN which had not been filled after the departure of staff as a result of the Group 4 restructure. This was causing great concern to both CPSU members and teachers.

We are happy to report that as a result of our most recent dispute meeting, those positions will be backfilled. TAFE NSW has also committed to reviewing agency-filled positions in related roles in Student Services that potentially could be offered to TAFE employees in temporary positions whose contracts are expiring.

The CPSU NSW is now willing to bring the dispute to an end.

This outcome was achieved as a result of your union taking up the issue on behalf of those affected, but we are only as strong as our members.

It is important that you continue to have a say and your voice is heard.

You can support the work of the union and your local delegates by joining the CPSU NSW.

Please forward this to your colleagues so that they know their rights and encourage them to JOIN THE CPSU
