PSA seeks relief for members’ fuel costs

The PSA CPSU NSW knows members, particularly those who use their private vehicles for work, are struggling with increased fuel costs.

In the past month alone average fuel prices have increased by as much as 50 per cent for diesel and at least 25 per cent for standard E10 unleaded petrol. A sharp increase in costs at the bowser is particularly brutal at a time when interest rates are also on the rise.

As such, PSA CPSU NSW General Secretary Stewart Little has written to the federal and state governments demanding action.

Mr Little has written to Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers seeking an immediate change to the Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO’s) method of calculating the rate at which kilometres are recompensed when workers use private vehicles for work purposes. He pointed out this rate has not been increased since July 2024, and has proposed the ATO issue a temporary determination increasing the value of the kilometre allowance.

Mr Little has also written to NSW Premier Chris Minns, demanding the State Government increase the value of the allowance members receive per kilometre of travel performed as part of their official duties.

He added that Public Sector workers should also be given priority access for official travel if the Federal Government places restrictions on the purchase of fuel.
