TAFE NSW curtails campus operations in hot spot local government areas

TAFE NSW has confirmed the closure of libraries, labs and onsite administration at Wetherill Park, Bankstown, Padstow, Liverpool and Miller campuses in response to growing COVID-19 infections and the tightening of NSW Government restrictions on non-essential work and travel.

The CPSU NSW last week wrote to TAFE Managing Director, Steffen Faurby. Your union called for the immediate closure of hot-spot campuses and a shift, wherever possible, to online, alternative and remote work arrangements for impacted staff, or paid Special Leave where alternatives were not practical. This will support NSW Health’s efforts to suppress transmission of the virus.

While hot-spot campuses will remain open for limited critical services (such as child care centres), staff unable to work remotely will be eligible to access paid Special Leave.

Additionally, TAFE NSW staff who normally travel to or from those local government areas (LGSa) for work will also be eligible for paid special leave where they can’t otherwise work remotely.

Students living in the Fairfield, Canterbury-Bankstown and Liverpool LGAs have been told not to attend campuses either inside or outside the LGAs until at least 30 July. Alternative support for students impacted by facility closures are available, and students should be encouraged to contact TAFE NSW for advice.

TAFE NSW is also making up to two hours of paid Special Leave available for staff attending COVID-19 vaccination appointments. Staff will also be able to access Sick Leave should they require additional to time associated with vaccination. While the union acknowledges this is a step in the right direction, we are still calling for the specific inclusion of Vaccination Leave in industrial all industrial instruments.

Finally, the CPSU NSW is conscious that there are many challenging issues associated with continuing campus operations across Greater Sydney and regional NSW. The union is committed to working hard to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of staff, students and the public. Remember, if you need help, we’re just a phone call away.
