KPIs at TAFE

The CPSU NSW has recently been advised that, in certain areas within TAFE NSW, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are being introduced. We understand that employees have been told that these KPIs will come into effect immediately, and that TAFE NSW employees are expected to meet them.

The CPSU NSW has lodged a dispute with TAFE NSW, as we know that TAFE NSW did not consult with employees before implementing KPIs. TAFE NSW are obligated to consult with workers and their representatives under the Enterprise Agreement in relation to any significant changes in the workplace, and it is the view of the CPSU NSW that the implementation of KPIs constitutes significant, or major, change.

We know that this decision has caused many CPSU NSW members significant distress, particularly given that TAFE NSW has recently gone through a change process that has seen many employees with years of experience leave the organisation. TAFE NSW are now faced with the issue of figuring out how to run an organisation that has been gutted by numerous restructures, with their apparent intention being  to make employees work as hard as they can according to arbitrary targets, without any consideration for the health and welfare of their staff.

The pressure placed on employees to meet unreasonable targets has only caused further anxiety in the workplace. There has also been no information regarding how staff are expected to meet these KPIs, and what will happen to workers who don’t meet them.

The CPSU NSW has also informed TAFE NSW that the status quo provisions in the Enterprise Agreement applies. What this means is that, until such a time as the dispute is resolved, ‘normal work’ continues. It is the view of the CPSU NSW that KPIs cannot be implemented at this point in time, and that you should not take any email regarding KPIs seriously until such a time as the CPSU NSW has had the opportunity to meet with TAFE NSW regarding this issue. If you are being told that you must meet you KPIs effectively immediately, please contact the CPSU NSW 1300 772 679 and we will gladly assist you.
