TAFE NSW – Telematics

TAFE NSW – Telematics April 2019 (pdf version)

TAFE has written to the CPSU NSW advising us of its intention to introduce new telematics technology in TAFE fleet vehicles which will commence operation on 31 July 2019.

This follows a trial of telematics in certain TAFE vehicles which TAFE had consulted with the CPSU NSW on in November 2018.

Telematics are essentially devices which can track the movement of TAFE vehicles.

According to TAFE the new system “will significantly improve driver and motor vehicle safety, automate log book entry … and will allow TAFE to optimise its fleet.”

Essentially, from the Union’s perspective consultation needs to occur on the introduction of tracking devices. We now seek feedback from affected members via your delegates. Your feedback is needed to help form our submission to TAFE Management.

Some factors/concerns already flagged to be raised include:

  1. Job Security – at some of our campuses there are staff employed to coordinate the use of fleet vehicles including bookings. TAFE’s intention as part of this project is to implement self-serve bookings at all campuses by the end of the year which will impact on tasks that members currently carry out.
  2. Safety – one of the advantages of having our staff coordinate use of vehicles is that they get to check vehicles and follow up on any concerns with vehicles as they are returned, thus ensuring when vehicles leave the campus they are in reasonable condition. A self-booking system may be detrimental to that process.
  3. Communication – TAFE has known about this for several months. Why have they not yet they communicated this to staff? Staff on the ground are wearing the brunt of concerns being raised by staff at the campuses.

The Union will also be ensuring TAFE comply with its legal obligations under the Workplace Surveillance Act.

Please send feedback to your local delegate.
