CPSU NSW wins $500 Sign-On Bonus for staff made redundant in the final week of 2017

On 14 December last year, WSU staff returned an overwhelming 98.58 per cent YES vote in favour of the new Professional Staff enterprise agreement.

In addition to significant improvements to current conditions around workloads, organisational change and redeployment, superannuation, parental leave, and domestic violence leave, the new agreement includes a $500 sign-on bonus, “paid in the last full pay period of 2017”.

As you know, 2017 was a particularly tumultuous year for WSU staff.

The Shared Services restructures directly affected almost all of the university’s Professional Staff, and the decision to outsource campus security in the latter part of the year saw yet another in-house service move to the private sector.

Many staff – some with more than 20 years’ dedicated service to the organization – found they no longer had a job, and accepted redundancies. A significant number of these staff exited the university on 20 December.

The final slap in the face for those staff being made redundant in the lead-up to Christmas was the university’s decision not to honour the $500 sign-on bonus for anyone who was no longer employed on 28 December.

On 20 December 2017, CPSU NSW wrote to the university to remind it of its legal and moral obligation to honour the $500 sign-on bonus for staff who were employed at the time of the vote, but who were made redundant in the final working week of the year.

You can read that letter HERE.

CPSU NSW is pleased to report that as a result of these efforts, the university has reversed its decision.

The $500 sign-on bonus will now be paid to all staff who exited the university between 14 December and 28 December 2017.
