TAFE restructure information

Restructure Info – Feb 21 (PDF version)

The CPSU NSW would like to remind you of the support and advocacy services we provide through our Member Support Centre and industrial teams. Put simply, we’re here to help.

Position mapping in Student Services and Facilities Management & Logistics

Many TAFE NSW staff have contacted the union confused by TAFE’s new position descriptions TAFE and the process used to ‘map’ roles between the current and proposed structures.

In some cases, the mapping process can be challenged, if we can determine that the difference between your existing position and the new position is not significantly different, and if the old and new positions are the same grade. Part of the challenge, however, is that most current Students Services and Facilities Management & Logistics workers were hired through the former regional Institutes of TAFE. This means there were 11 different types of job description for similar roles, sometimes more, as workers were hired over years and decades.

TAFE has provided the CPSU NSW with more than 900 job descriptions for staff affected by the restructure, are our staff are currently working through that information with representatives from our state delegates council and local activists.

What you can do

If you believe your position was incorrectly mapped, or was not mapped at all but should have been, we want to hear from you.

Information needed to analyse your job mapping:

  • Your job title from the last time you went through an interview process
  • Your job title from when you were originally hired into your substantive position (for most people it will be the same as the above)
  • If you can find your original job description somewhere, that is gold – please send that to us
  • The month and year you were hired by TAFE NSW or an Institute of TAFE in NSW
  • The TAFE Worker Level or TAFE Manager pay grade of your current substantive position
  • Your name and CPSU NSW membership number, and contact details
  • If your PD is out-of-date and you are working to different duties to the duties outlines in your documented PD.

Email our member support team at and we’ll get cracking. Once you have the position description, have a look at it yourself, see whether you think it compares favourably to one of the new positions of the same grade. You can see the new positions HERE.

Why do we want to do this?

Challenging the mapping process is useful where there are unmapped new positions. It gives us the opportunity to push TAFE to directly match more workers to jobs. It is up to you whether you think this mapping review process could be a valuable one for you to participate in, but we are ready to support you either way.

Other questions about the restructure and tour job security

For other questions and concerns, the CPSU NSW asks that you ring the Member Support Centre on 1300 772 679 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) so all issues are properly logged into our tracking system.

This will enable the CPSU NSW to identify patterns where extra support might be needed, or where systemic issues need to be addressed – this is true all the time, not just around restructures.

If you are uncertain about what to ask, or you are nervous about contacting the union, please get in contact with one of your delegates below for advice.

Your regional delegates will be in touch with you regularly throughout this restructure process. We will be offering explanations about what is going on, and updating members on the progress of any negotiations between the CPSU NSW and TAFE.
