Workload: don’t be flogged by TAFE

Workload bulletin – Jan 2020 (PDF version)

The CPSU NSW has been continuing to represent to management various concerns raised in relation to increased workload, as a result of more than 100 agency staff being sacked before Christmas and a further 91 permanent staff being forcefully retrenched on 13 January 2020.

A predominant reason relied on by managers for the cuts is “duplicated work”. However, the CPSU NSW rejects this reasoning as it is clear that the work will be passed on to the remaining staff.

In the information technology area alone, 37 jobs have been made redundant and this will directly affect the delivery of support to classes throughout TAFENSW. The front offices are also going to be impacted with increased workload due to the agency staff in the VCC area being sacked.

The workload for remaining staff is now the greatest concern of members and has been raised strongly at every meeting between the Union and the Management.

The CPSU NSW argues that priorities and deadlines of work needs to be managed properly. TAFENSW’s response after much discussion is to develop a “leaders’ guide” which will be distributed to TAFENSW managers about ‘quality conversations and providing clear direction in relation to expectations and priorities’.

Workload will be an ongoing issue and one that the union members will need to monitor.

UNION ADVICE: So that there is no confusion, request all directions to work any duties you believe are outside your scope of work be provided in writing. In addition, keep your union delegate informed. Members cannot refuse a reasonable request to perform work, however the onus is on TAFENSW to demonstrate the request is a reasonable one and manages workflows appropriately.

Please get in contact with your relevant union delegates with your thoughts and/or any questions by 13 February 2020.
