TAFE: Update on return to campus

Late last week staff received an update from TAFE Managing Director Steffen Faurby outlining the plan for staff to start returning to work. Your CPSU NSW TAFE Delegates and officials have been meeting on a regular basis every Tuesday and Thursday and will continue to do so during October.

The CPSU NSW would like to clarify a number of matters in relation to the recent update, the CPSU NSW does not agree with the assertion that Library staff or any other staff should undertake the keeping of records of attendance. There is no requirement for staff to do this and there has been no consultation on undertaking of recording student’s attendance indeed negotiation on how staff are expected to record staff and students checking in.

The suggestion provided by the CPSU NSW was that whilst staff and students must check in using the Service NSW QR code this should be done at the entrance of the campus where practical and not at several points throughout the college.  There has been no formal plan on how to undertake the record of students and staff other than the daily record of attendance in EBS, which is a requirement of teaching staff.

The CPSU NSW recommends the risk assessments should continue to be periodically updated to ensure health and safety measures are aligned with requirements outlined in the NSW Public Health Orders. This does not mean the risk assessments are simply a tick and flick, it’s important staff engage with these arrangements. All staff have the right to view and comment on the risk assessments in place to ensure your safety.

Members are also not required to request evidence of students’ COVID-19 vaccination status. However, teaching sections should look at the evidence and make a written note that it has been sighted. Evidence does not need to be stored and retained by TAFE NSW. It is recommendation of CPSU NSW that staff do not approach or request evidence of the status of a person’s vaccination. The reasoning for this is that no support or policy is in place for TAFE NSW staff to undertake this and therefore ensure their safety

Members are reminded that non-student-facing staff must continue to work from home if it is reasonably practicable to do so. Where there is some confusion on this in the first instance contact your supervisor/team leader. Contact your union for any further clarity.
